"Awareness of the feeling of love makes it grow. Let's grow some love today!"

Gifts of the Season

It may be cold outside (especially if you live in New England), but this is also a season that can warm our hearts if we slow down and let it. The holidays bring into focus a greater awareness of those we share our hearts with--a spouse, parents, children, sisters, brothers, and a variety of others we consider our extended family and friends (our own unique community). Taking time to share moments of singing, laughter and easy conversations with loved ones often crystallizes into favorite memories of holidays past.

But with the hectic pace of the season, we often forget to pay attention to the meaning special people in our lives hold for us. By just noticing the things we would miss if that person weren't here, we can experience a profound appreciation for them. Such thoughts can remind us of the treasures inherent in the life we are living now, too.

Which aspects of your holidays do you particularly look forward to? Is it the music? Maybe it's baking cookies with the kids. I love to put on Christmas music and decorate the tree--it gets me in the spirit of the holidays. The important thing is to do what you love and be mindful when you do it.

Here are a few tips to get the most out of your holidays this year:

  • Practice healthy self-care and don't let yourself get too hungry, angry, lonely or tired

  • Easy does it when it comes to parties, shopping, eating, drinking--you'll feel better and actually enjoy yourself when you choose not to "DO IT ALL"

  • Plan something special just for you--lunch with a friend, taking in a holiday show, getting a massage, taking an extra day off to do whatever you want...

  • Drink extra water to keep any toxins moving out of your system

  • Meditate every day to settle your mind and reduce extra stress

  • Practice yoga or another form of daily exercise to help your body energize and rejuvenate

Most of all, relax, enjoy the season and remember that your beautiful, unique spirit is a special gift to your loved ones too!

Almond Butter Hummus

Prep Time:

24 hours

Cooking Time:

2 1/2 hours

Yields:

1 Quart

Ingredients:

1 cup chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
˝ strip Kombu (seaweed)
˝ cup sheep’s milk yogurt
1/3 cup raw almond butter
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
Sea salt
to taste
Cayenne pepper to taste

Directions:

Put chickpeas in a bowl and add water so that water level is approximately one inch above beans. Cover and let soak 24 hours.
Put chickpeas in pot and cover with fresh water. Bring to a boil and cook about 10 minutes. Discard water and “shock” the beans by adding fresh cold water, so the water level is approximately one inch above beans. Add ˝ strip of Kombu to beans (improves digestibility and increases nutrients). Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 2 ˝ hours or until beans are soft. DO NOT DISCARD COOKING WATER.
Combine cooked chickpeas, almond butter, cumin, coriander and yogurt and puree in food processor. Slowly add some of the cooking water until desired consistency (smooth). Next, add the yogurt to create a fluffier texture. Sprinkle in a little salt and cayenne pepper to taste. Serve warm or cold.
